Water in your phone speaker?
The first five minutes
- Get it out of the water. Obvious, but speed matters more than technique here.
- Speaker down, gentle shake. Let gravity do the easy work. Don't blow into the grille — you'll push water deeper.
- Disconnect Bluetooth. Any cleaning tone is useless if it's playing through your earbuds.
- Run Water Eject. Low-frequency pulses move the diaphragm hard enough to help expel water near the opening.
- Dry before charging. Let the device dry naturally. Don't charge a wet phone.
Myths to ignore
- Rice. Doesn't meaningfully dry the inside of a phone, and starch dust near the speaker is the opposite of helpful.
- Hair dryer on hot. Heat risks the battery and adhesives. Room-temperature airflow is fine; hot air is not.
- "100% volume fixes everything." Strong but undistorted beats maximum. Distortion just adds harshness.
Salt water and dirty water
Fresh water is the kindest case. Salt or sugary liquids leave residue when they dry, which can keep a speaker muffled after the water itself is gone. Eject promptly, and if muffling persists once fully dry, run Deep Clean — then consider professional cleaning rather than repeating cycles endlessly.
